Improve Your Health For Free (Use Sunlight)

Humans had lived and depended on the sun since many years ago. Since then, the government and health officials regularly issued public messages and warnings about sunlights harmful effects as well as the increased risks for conditions such as skin cancer. Although sunlight may have negative effects, it also carries health benefits.

Benefits of Sunlight

Here, we have listed health benefits that are associated with sun exposure. Continue reading and learn how to improve your health with the sun’s healing power!

1. Sunlight Initiates the Release of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a type of fat-soluble vitamin that is produced within the body from sunlight exposure. Aside from the regulation of calcium and phosphorus, the promotion of bone health, vitamin D has been linked to the improvement of brain function.

2. Sunlight Helps Improve Brain Function

In a study led by David Llewellyn, a neuroscientist of the University of Cambridge, it has been found that at the lower the human’s vitamin D levels are, the more negatively their performance on mental tests are. Compared with those who have vitamin D at appropriate levels, those who have deficiency were twice as likely to be cognitively challenged.

3. Sunlight Improves your Gut’s Health

One of the advantages of sunlight exposure is its ability to help maintain calcium and phosphorus levels. The active form of vitamin D, Calcitriol, maintains serum calcium levels in the body by increasing the absorption of calcium (and phosphorus) in the digestive tract. Vitamin D also works alongside thyroid glands to regulate the levels of thyroid hormones which are responsible for several bodily functions.

4. Sunlight Reduces the Risk of Peripheral Vascular Disease

Vitamin D has a fundamental role in reducing the risk of peripheral vascular diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and hypertension. Research says that many mechanisms may explain the link between peripheral vascular disease and vitamin D.

5. Sunlight Boosts Mood

Research shows that sunlight exposure increases the release of a neurotransmitter (a chemical substance that is released at the ends of the nerve fiber) called serotonin. Serotonin is responsible for boosting the mood of an individual. It also keeps a person relaxed or focused. With low levels of serotonin, there is a higher risk of depression, which is apparent for individuals with the Seasonal Affective Disorder — a form of major depression due to lack of light, especially during late autumn and winter.

6. Sunlight Improves Sleep Quality

When the sun rays enter the eyes, a message is sent to a part in the brain. Then, the production of melatonin — a hormone that helps us feel drowsy, is shut down. That is how the body gets the idea of whether it is night or day. In short, the sun helps maintain the normal circadian rhythm. People with low levels of melatonin production during nighttime experience poor sleep quality. It is a result of melatonin overproduction during day time.

7. Sunlight Lowers Cholesterol

One of the health benefits of sunlight exposure is that it helps in lowering cholesterol level. How? The sun converts bad cholesterol in the bloodstream into steroid and sex hormones that aid in reproduction.

8. Sunlight Builds the Immune System

Sunlight helps in suppressing the hyperactive response of the immune system. It is used to treat certain autoimmune and skin conditions such as psoriasis. Sun exposure also aids in increasing white blood cells, which are responsible for fighting and defending the body against infections.

9. Sunlight Reduces the Risk of Certain Types of Cancers

Lack of vitamin D increases the risk of some kinds of cancer such as colon or breast cancer. In a study conducted by Dr. Frank and his brother, epidemiologist Cedric Garland, which appeared in the International Journal of Epidemiology, they were able to establish a link between the risk of colon cancer and vitamin D that is produced through exposure to the sunshine.

10. Sunlight Improves Bone Health

The sun initiates Vitamin D’s release in the body. Once released, it helps with calcium absorption and bone growth. Without the correct amount of vitamin levels in the system, bones become soft and fragile in children and misshapen in adults.

Improve Your Health, Get Enough Sunbath

Most people around the globe do not get enough exposure from the sun. This is one of the reasons why the human population experiences a medical epidemic of low levels of vitamin D. Although vitamin D is available as a dietary supplement, it will be more practical to increase vitamin D reserve by getting enough sunbath. With caution and correct information about how to safely enjoy morning sunlight benefits, you can improve your health for free by using sunlight!
