We don’t blame you… you probably drank too much without noticing because of a good tabletop conversation, and now, you are experiencing an incapacitating headache because of a hangover. Well, it is the holidays, after all. So, whether you drank too much, or a family of yours, here are your options for a hangover cure.
5 Natural Remedies After Drinking Too Much
Not a fan of medications to relieve your headache or stomach upset from drinking way too much? No problem. Here are natural ways to cure a hangover.
Ice cubes or plain biscuits
Ice cubes or plain crackers are useful remedies for nausea. Nausea is that queasy or uneasy feeling in the stomach that may result in vomiting. Ice cubes or chips will also help you hydrated, especially after throwing up.
Lots of water
Like we’ve previously mentioned, it is essential to remain well hydrated. That means drinking lots and lots of water as you can tolerate. Rehydrating not only regulates your body temperature, but it maintains most bodily functions and flushes the impurities (like alcohol) your system.
Water is good, but it won’t be enough. Why? Because when you threw up, you lost a lot of electrolytes in your body. Fruit juices like orange juice contain vitamin C and other nutrients; that is why you need to take in electrolyte-rich juices or other fluids, too — like coconut water, or even — a bowl of soup… to restore the electrolytes you have lost.
For many centuries, ginger has been used for its natural medicinal properties. It helps reduce muscle soreness or pain and has anti-inflammatory effects. Not only that, because ginger is widely used for gastrointestinal complaints. Research demonstrates that it is safe and effective in treating nausea and vomiting. So, if you are still feeling nauseated after sucking ice cubes, try nibbling ginger cuts or crystallized ginger. If you do not like candying ginger, try boiling a few slices and sipping it as a ginger tea.
Hangover Cure Smoothie
Although the options above like ice cubes, water, fruit juice, and ginger could help with a hangover, they aren’t as fun to drink as a smoothie. So, here is a DIY smoothie for your hangover.
- 1 large ripe peeled banana
- 7 large pieces of hulled strawberries
- ½ green apple or pear
- 4 thin slices of ginger
- ½ freshly-squeezed lemon juice
- ½ cup coconut milk (or greek yogurt)
- milk of choice (optional)
- Wash all ingredients and remove peel if necessary.
- Add everything into a blender.
- Blend until creamy.
- Pour into a glass or a tumbler bottle.
Between these natural remedies, take a rest, go back to bed, and sleep. A hangover won’t be cured just by drinking or eating the fruits and fluids listed above, but a lack of sleep will only make it worse. After all, sleeping is our body’s way of healing itself.
